Mountain to Sound Outfitters West Seattle Owner Greg Whitaker

Greg Whittaker is the owner and founder of Mountain to Sound Outfitters and Alki Kayak Tours in West Seattle. He has been working in the ski industry since high school, and began guiding sea kayak tours in 1999 in the San Juan Islands. After a 5-year stint as a project manager working on environmental monitoring and cleanup projects, Greg took the leap to provide the first saltwater-based sea kayak touring operation in the Seattle. Greg started Alki Kayak Tours in 2005 and went back to work ski shops in the winters. In 2007, Greg began the Seattle Ski Shuttle to provide an option for those needing a ride to our local ski areas. In 2009, working with local West Seattle cronies, he found a location and began Mountain to Sound Outfitters in November 2009. Greg has sat as the tourism representative for the Washington State Oil Spill Advisory Council and was involved in the Citizens Advisory Committee for the City of Seattle’s Shoreline Master Program. Greg currently sits on the Washington State Boater Safety Council as well as the Northwest Marine Trade Association Paddlesports Committee.

Providing top-notch gear and advice for people is a passion that continues as he develops additional sustainable tourism opportunities and raises his 2 sons Keller and Elwood with his wife and partner Kara. Mountain to Sound Outfitters is an active member of the West Seattle Business community and supports local and regional programs focusing on kids and environmental issues.

ROSIE ENG SCHATZ - General Manager

Coming soon ...

JESSIE MEYER - Sales Associate

Jessie has been skiing since the age of 2 and has loved every moment he has spent on snow. Although born in Maryland, Jessie spent his winters in New England throughout high school as he attended Waterville Valley Ski Academy in New Hampshire. After he decided to stop ski racing, he then competed as part of the crew team at St. Lawrence University in Upstate New York. Jessie is passionate about the outdoors and the ocean as he plans to attend graduate school in the near future to obtain a master’s degree (and eventually PhD) in marine science. Outside of skiing Jessie enjoys backpacking and spending most of his free time in the outdoors photographing landscapes and wildlife. He is excited to explore the backcountry opportunities that Washington has to offer and share his love for outdoor recreation.

RACHEL MILLARD - Sales Associate

An astrologer recently told Rachel that this time in her life will connect with two previous turning points. The one constant between them? Rachel was snowboarding and/or working in the industry. Aside from happy, little pow clouds, Rachel has lived in many places, including Canada and Japan and likes to surf, travel, hike and explore the PNW.

ALEX CRAVEN - Sales Associate

Alex first went skiing at the age of 6 at Schweitzer, with a family friend who was a ski instructor. Since then, he has had the privilege of skiing every winter, mostly at Crystal Mountain. For a lot of his childhood, Alex lived 45 minutes from the mountain and was part of a ski racing program for several years, where he really started to enjoy the sport. Today, Alex is 17 and attends West Seattle High School. He still loves skiing, and plans to attend the University of North Dakota to pursue a bachelor's degree in commercial aviation. He is looking forward to another ski season and being a part of the Mountain to Sound Outfitters staff.

Mountain to Sound Outfitters sales staff member Kendell Tylee

KENDELL TYLEE - Sales Associate

Kendell grew up in south Seattle, and after roughly 12 years away working across the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia, is thrilled to be back in her hometown. She grew up learning how to snowboard in Snoqualmie and kayak in the San Juans. She is fortunate to have snowboarded in Argentina and trekked through Patagonia. Kendell first worked in the outdoor industry in 2011 in Southern California and loves teaching and community engagement.

POSEIDON - Marketing

Poseidon has been at Mountain to Sound Outfitters since December of 2015.  He is usually found in the middle of the walkway or on the top step to the office.  Like his sister Hera, he enjoys lounging around the shop and saying hi to people stopping by.  His favorite food is peanut butter and he enjoys laying beneath the maple tree at home.

HERA - Receiving

Hera came to Mountain to Sound Outfitters in January of 2018 from Southern California.  She enjoys spending time with her brother Poseidon and her friend Otis.  She spends her day lounging around the shop and always enjoys saying hi to new friends who come in the store.  Be sure to say hi to her when she is in the shop!
